Built without a toe puff or a stiffened heel counter, so the shoe folds flat and takes the shape of the foot almost immediately. The trade-off is that it holds its own shape only when treed — leave it untreed and it will collapse.

Wearing them in, and keeping them

Break-in

Almost no break-in. The upper has no stiffening, so it takes the shape of the foot within one or two wears.

Polishing

Cream polish every 8–10 wears; a light conditioning wax every third application.

Shoe trees

Trees are not optional on this pattern. Without a tree the unstructured upper will collapse across the vamp.

After rain

If they get wet, wipe them down, stuff loosely with paper for the first hour, then tree them and dry away from any heat source for 24 hours.
